First photographed and hand-printed by Austin Young in 1988, Portrait of Leigh Bowery captures the legendary artist and fashion icon at the height of his creative power. The image was originally part of series of portraits by Young published in FAD magazine in1988 that featured seminal figures of queer performance culture, including RuPaul, Lady Bunny, Glamamore, Chiklet, and Connie Fleming. Young’s original darkroom print—meticulously bleached and toned by hand—was later scanned by the artist to produce this large-format archival edition.
This portrait was also published in the seminal monograph Leigh Bowery (Violette Editions, 1998), cementing its place in the visual canon of queer art history.
