jan lynch

Jan Lynch (1952-1996), a Vatican-educated Byzantine Catholic priest, was also a photographer and historian in Knoxville, TN. A devotee of Imogen Cunningham, Jan photographed “anything that can be exposed to light,” with a particular fondness for portraiture and male nudes. He had an openness and exuberance people connected with, and it radiates back at us intimately through his work. Jan could also be a rascal, fond of “rattling cages,” as he would say. A flamboyant gay man growing up in Southern Appalachia, he instinctively knew where the cage boundaries were and didn’t have to go far to rattle them. Able to keep his two worlds separate until near the end, his first hospitalization with AIDS complications brought them together. Well-wishers from both worlds, church and gay, overflowed his hospital room, eyeing each other in astonishment. His funeral in 1996 saw a similarly diverse gathering, the local Bishop delivering Byzantine funeral rites in tears. Jan was a photographer for the McClung Historical Collection, traveling all over East Tennessee copying family photo archives. Echoes of that historical impulse can be found in Jan’s own photography. Beyond the artistry, his work is an extensive record of gay life and activism in Southern Appalachia during the pivotal 1980s through the mid-90s.
