CULTUREEDIT ART AUCTION #1
Mako Berlin
Born in Los Angeles and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, LA resident 30-year-old Mako Berlin art focuses on sex positivity and the release of shame. Drawing since the age of 3, with a BFA in Graphic Design from Art Center College of Design, he has worked for several years in design and fashion studios, and after assisting and helping with clients and others’ visions has decided to make art under his own name. The art is metaphorically autobiographical; stylistically it is an amalgamation of Eastern and Western influences, having been raised on the west coast by a white father and a Japanese mother and influenced by American and Japanese animation and video games growing up. Employing the tropes and symbols of nostalgia and Americana, old retro gay porn mags and zines, and neon Pantone colors in comic book strips, the drawing combines these styles and adds the influence of Japanese bara manga using surrealism and cartoon-like, exaggerated proportions.
