Karen Finley is an American postwar and contemporary artist born in 1956, known for her controversial and provocative work in performance art, writing, and visual art. Finley's work addresses taboo subjects like sexuality, abuse, disenfranchisement, and the female body. Finley works across various media, including installation, video, literature, and painting. In 1990, Finley and three other artists had their grants from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) rescinded after facing accusations of "indecency". Finley is currently an Arts Professor in the Art and Public Policy department at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. She continues to create and perform, recently staging a one-woman show about the pandemic, receiving critical acclaim. Finley is also engaged in ongoing visual art projects, with a recent solo exhibition, "More Desperate Than Ever", exploring themes of grief, healing, and censorship.
